First inhabitants of the island they are mentioned the Sindies to which Ifestos taught the art of processing the copper. Great prospetiry was achieved during the Pre-historic Age. In the historic years it was named Dipolis because of the fact that there were two powerful cities, Myrina and Ifestia. Limnos was conquered by Persians, Venetians, Turks. It was liberated in 1912.

Limnos with its volcanic landscape is extended in 476 sq.km dominating in north-eastern Aegean sea. In a distance of 179 n.m. (18 hours) from Piraeus. Capital of the island is Myrina with a lot of sightseeings. Situated around two gulfs, the harbour and Romeikos Ghialos. In the middle there is the rock with the castle at the top of it. It was built by Andronikos A Komninos, there were made additional parts by Ioustiniani and the Venetians. You will visit ruins of polyonian wall construction and carved in the rock stairs. Myrina is being built in the place of the ancient city. Very significant is considered the Archeological Museum of Myrina with findings of the said region, of Ifestia, of Kaviron and Poliochnis. They cover the period from the Pre-historic till Hellenistic Age being mainly reliefs, vessels and works of sculpture. Remarkable buildings are the Karatzadios Library. The Cathedral of St.Triada and a little beyond the church of Panaghia Kakaviotissa. Moudros is an important town, situated 25 km. eastwards of Myrina. It was a base of our navy during the Balkan Wars and of the Allied Navy during the First World War. Also it was the former capital of the island. In Moudros you can visit the church of Annunciation of Virgin Mary. Setting off the capital of the island as far as Moudros, the historical harbour, do visit Kaminia, in a distance of 28 km. eastwards of Myrina, with the town of Poliochni since the neolithic Age. It is the most ancient village of the Neolithic Age in the region of Aegean sea. Here, they were discovered four villages, built one at the top of the other. Taking this road you will meet picturesque gulfs and traditional villages. Houses of the village Kontias, 11 km. east of Myrina preserve the local architectural characteristics. After reaching Kontopouli, 29 km. from Myrina, Asprolimni and Hortarolimni with water-birds cut along the plain that is reaching the sea. In the same region the ruins of Ifestia are to be found the most emminent town of Limnos in the Classic Antiquity and the sanctuary of Kavira. 25 km. north-east of Myrina is the inland traditional village Repanidi and in the location Kotsina the ruins of the byzantine castle in which the heroine Maroula fought against the Turks in the 15th century.
